Acid Reflux Diet

Suffering from acid reflux is a nightmare. You suffer from the pain and uncomfortable feeling of the burning sensation without relief or pain. Many people suffer from heartburn while other people die of heart attacks due to thinking the signs and symptoms are heartburn when in fact it is a heart attack.

Acid reflux and heartburn occurs when the end of the esophagus and the top of the stomach’s ring called the LES fails to prevent the stomach acids from rising up into the esophagus. The lifestyles of individuals are the leading cause to them suffering from acid reflux and heartburn. The diet consumed is the leading factor so to control acid reflux means modify the diet to reduce the symptoms.

The foods contributing to acid reflux and heartburn include meat such as ground beef, chicken nugget style, chicken or Buffalo wings, and marbled sirloin. Fats, sweets, and oils are other contributing factors that include chocolate, potato chips, corn chips, brownies, doughnuts, fried foods, fatty foods, high fat butter cookies, and oily or creamy salad dressings. Fruits, vegetables and juices that affect acid reflux are orange juice, lemon juice, limejuice, lemonade, grapefruit juice, tomatoes, cranberry juice, raw onions, potato salad, and mashed potatoes.

Beverages that are carbonated, liquor, coffee, tea, and wine are the triggers as well as certain grains including spaghetti with tomato sauce and macaroni and cheese. Certain dairy products increase the effects of acid reflux include sour cream, ice cream, cottage cheese, and milk shakes.

Diets high in the foods and beverages cause the acid reflux and heartburn. The more serious GERD is the result of extreme heartburn and can cause esophageal cancer if left untreated. Avoid eating the foods that cause the acid reflux as well as eating smaller meals to reduce the production of stomach acids.

Changing of the diet to low fat in smaller quantities reduces heartburn. When smaller meals are consumed, the small intestines can process the food faster and limit the production of the stomach acids. Chew the food into smaller bits to help with digestion.
When the diet has restricted or reduced amounts of foods or beverages that produce the natural stomach acids, the decreasing of symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn will generally happen.
