Acid Reflux Remedy
The misery of acid reflux can truly impact on your life. You wake from a deep sleep to find yourself gagging on acid, or you have to leave a meeting because of the cough you fear might end in vomiting. No one deserves to go through the frustration and discomfort you’re experiencing. You need an acid reflux remedy.
Some of the most common symptoms of acid reflux are:
Recurring heartburn
Regurgitation, especially at night after lying down for awhile
Trouble swallowing
Nausea
Chest pain
Pain when swallowing
While looking for an acid reflux remedy you should remember that many people use this term and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) interchangeably. Both appear to be caused by abnormal reflux in the esophagus.
One acid reflux remedy is to avoid the foods that might cause the problem.
Coffee
Alcohol
Tobacco products (Smoking can be a big factor in acid reflux)
Carbonated soft drinks
Tomatoes
Broccoli
Brussels sprouts
Cabbage
Cauliflower
Onions
Spinach
Milk
Chocolate
Peppermint
Any food that’s high in fat
Greasy or fried food
Antacids contain calcium carbonate (If you have acid reflux look for antacids containing aluminum hydroxide instead.)
When looking for an acid reflux remedy you should remember that large meals can cause the problem. Try taking smaller more frequent meals to decrease the incidence of this issue. Also try not to eat too close to the time you go to bed. The last meal of snack should be 2-3 hours before lying down.
Another acid reflux remedy is to sleep on your left side if possible as this seems to help. You can also try keeping your head elevated when you sleep with a large, but firm pillow or wedge. This prevents at least part of the back flow of gastric fluids that cause the sudden waking to coughing or vomiting.
Some swear a good acid reflux remedy is to simply take over-the-counter antacids before mealtime. You can also try taking them right before bedtime if you frequently have the problem when you sleep.
Another good acid reflux remedy that’s now available over-the-counter is Prilosec or other similar drugs containing omeprazole, pantoprazole, lansoprazole and rabeprazole all of which can reduce gastric acid secretion. Since these are time released drugs if taken in the morning, they should last through the night.
